Seventeen Eyeliner Reviews

As in reviews of two eyeliners from the brand Seventeen, not seventeen reviews of different eyeliners! That would be a pretty long post… Both of these eyeliners I got in a gift set in the January sale as featured in my Christmas Beauty Haul. The set contained four eyeliners for only £6.

Make Your Mark Soft Eyeliner Pen £3.99

I have to say, I am surprised at how black this eyeliner look in these photos, as one of my main complaints about it is that its rather lacking in pigmentation. I find I have to go over it a few times to get a truly black line line and even then parts of it can look quite washed out. But that is something I find with all of these pen application eyeliners.

What is does better than the likes of the Barry M equivalent, is it’s staying power. This stays in place all day without smudging, unlike the Barry M Wink eyeliner pen, which I find transfers and smudges off in a matter of hours.

As it is a fine nibbed pen, I found Mark Your Mark to be very easy to apply and is really good for creating a smooth line and even flicks, although I did sometimes need to use it a bit to get the product to come out properly.

Overall, I think that this would be a great product for someone who is just starting out with eyeliner as they would have a lot of control and can build it up to be as dark as they like it. For me, however, I prefer something that applies more strongly, so I don’t think I’ll be repurchasing this.

Tattoo Me Semi Permanent Liquid Eyeliner £4.99

I have several complaints about this eyeliner, but unlike Make Your Mark pigmentation isn’t one of them. This applies a proper deep black instantly, without any layering needed. However, the consistency of the product is quite thick, almost gel-like, which can be difficult to work with. I could probably get used to it though if it wasn’t for the brush. This has one of those really long stems with a long thin brush on the end, so I can’t hold it close enough to get the control I want. Plus the brush hairs will occasionally flick out and mess up the edging. As this product dries incredibly quickly and is difficult to remove, I can’t take it off and redo it, so end up having to go back over in, ending up with a very thick uneven line by the end of it. I usually end up with transfer on my upper eyelid, which if I don’t remove immediately is then there for the rest of the day, something I have had to do almost every time I have worn this.

I also seem to find this all over my eyelashes, which again I put down to my inability to control the brush. The thickness and quick dry time mean that this has clumped my lashes together before I even start my mascara and gives me spider lashes. Not my favourite look.

The fact that this is advertised as a semi-permanent eyeliner with 48hour wear probably should have been a bit of a clue about the longevity of this eyeliner, but I just thought they were exaggerating a bit. After all, who keeps their make up on for two days? But I do put my make up on around 8am and take it off sometime after I get home from work at 6pm, which I think is pretty standard for a lot of people and I want my eyeliner to stay in place smudge-free throughout. Don’t get me wrong, it easily does this. But I don’t like how it feels or how awkward it is to remove. During the day, the skin under this eyeliner will sometimes sting a bit where it is struggling to breathe, so by the time I get home I’m usually pretty keen to get it off. I’ve tried using both my much loved Garnier Micellar Water and the incredible Liz Earle Eyebright to take this off, one after the other, with much scrubbing (and irritation) to less than satisfactory effect. With anything else, these both make short work of my heavy eye make up without any scrubbing needed, but even combined I have residual eyeliner left with Tattoo Me, as shown in the photo below.

Overall, I really haven’t been getting along with this eyeliner. The longevity of it is really impressive, but I think it lasts a bit too long leading to skin irritation. Add to that my inability to get a smooth line with it and I can confidently assure you that I will not be buying this eyeliner again.

Although neither of these are my perfect eyeliner, I do think they both have some good points and are really affordable products. However, I think Seventeen offer a much better eyeliner, which you can read about in my Forever Repurchasing post later in the week!
