January Love Me Beauty Box First Impressions

Jan LMB

So this month, I slightly impulsively decided to order a new beauty box. One of my favourite bloggers, Rachael from Helpless Whilst Drying posted about this subscription service on her blog last week and I was very intrigued.

But don’t you already have a Glossybox subscription?

Well, yes I do. But I haven’t enjoyed my past couple of boxes as much as I was. I have found that Glossybox have been sending out more products which are selected for everyone, as opposed to ones which have been picked out based on my beauty profile. This means that I’ve been sent some blushers which are far too strong for my very pale skin and skincare products which I have had allergic reactions to (more on that later). So although Glossybox have been offering great value for money, there’s been a fair few items I can’t/won’t use lately.

What makes Love Me Beauty different?

Instead of being a surprise, like Glossybox and most other beauty subscription boxes, you get to choose your products from an available list. But you also have products recommended to you based on your beauty profile, which you can decide whether or not you want. Should you want to choose a couple of favourites and have the rest selected for you for the surprise element, you can do that too! This means you can pick the main thing you like in the colour you want and still get products which are tailored for you based on your beauty profile.

This works on a credits based points system. Each month you get 6 credits. More expensive and full sized items are worth 2 credits, whilst cheaper brands and samples are worth 1 credit. The size and value of each item is available on the site. So its completely up to you whether you want 3 items worth 2 credits, 6 items worth 1 credit or any other combination. If you’re really spoilt for choice, you can even buy additional items for your box at a reduced price. The flexibility of this box is really astonishing!

Probably the best part for me though, was that I could browse through the products available this month and pick out what I wanted before having to commit to paying. Plus, I used a 50% off code which Rachael posted on her blog, so instead of the usual price of £10 + £3.95 P&P, I paid £8.95.

Let’s take a moment to appreciate this packaging now shall we? Everything is really high quality and has a feel of luxury about it, so it really is a treat to get. As for the postage, Love Me Beauty sent my items the next working day as promised and it arrived in 3 days, so I have absolutely no complaints there.

I chose to get a 2 credit item and the rest 1 credit items, for a total of 5 products. Love Me Beauty had a great range of brands and products to pick from, but I opted not to go for skincare due to recent troubles (I think I’m better off sticking to a routine for now).

Nailberry Polish in Strawberry Jam

The first product I picked up was this polish, for which there were a choice of 5 shades. This is a brand Rachael was very excited to try, which made me want to try them to. This is a full sized bottle worth £13.50! Here’s part of the LMB description: ‘Free of Formaldehyde, Toluene, DBP and Camphor. It is also cruelty free.’ Strawberry Jam is more pink toned than it looks on the site, but is still a really nice colour with good coverage. For the price, I expecting it to last well on my nails too. This was my 2 credit item. Note to self: check nail polish swatches online first!

Anatomicals Never Lose Your Cherry Lip Balm

Have I told you guys how obsessed I am with lip balms? I own many, but still buy more and I love both the scent and taste of cherries so I added this to my box without hesitation. I have previously tried one Anatomicals products, which I received in my Glossybox and was really impressed with the quality of the products and adored the tongue in cheek branding. This is another full sized product worth £2.55. It unfortunately doesn’t taste of cherries, but is really nice nonetheless. And the packaging!

Ecotools Full Eye Shadow Brush

Ecotools is a brand I have seen in stores and heard a lot of good things about but never tried. I know, I know, how have I not? Well the truth is, before blogging I never really used make up brushes and didn’t own proper ones, so this is a welcome addition to my tiny collection. I’ve also never had a brush in a beauty box before, but think its a great option. From what I can see online, this brush is also known as the eye shading brush and is worth £4.99, which is a reasonable amount to pay for such a high quality soft brush.

Max Factor Color Perfect Duo in Shooting Star

I figured, what would be more perfect to try my new eye shadow brush out with than some new eye shadow? Again, Max Factor is a brand I have seen around, but I’ve only ever used one of their nail poilishes. It’s a mid range brand for a drugstore, but one I’ve not tested. I thought these colours looked like shades I would wear a lot. The duo may be little, but is great for taking away. I found the shadows to be quite buildable and very complimentary. They’re perfect shades for me. Unfortunately, they creased slightly during my shift today, despite wearing primer, but not unbearably. This is a full sized item worth £6.49.

Here’s a subtle smokey eye I created with the Max Factor duo. I love that the deeper shade is purple toned, as it really makes my eyes pop. I had to blend the darker tone quite a bit to make it work friendly, but the bolder look  would be great in the evening.

Anatomicals Don’t Just Clean It Woman, Scrub It Body Scrub

I had one credit left and was looking through the options and decided to go for another Anatomicals product, as I wanted something other than just make up. This is a full sized 200ml bottle worth £3.49. Its grapefruit scented which smells amazing! I’m looking forward to giving this a go.

In total, my box was worth £31.02! I’m really pleased with the value for money Love Me Beauty have given me. It may be possible to get a higher box value depending on which products you chose, I personally didn’t add it up as I went, but rather selected what I was most interested in.

Other products which are available in January’s box are Max Factor foundation, Bourjois bronzing powder sprat and Mirabella lipstick, amongst others.

Any downsides?

The site doesn’t work very well on mobiles, especially the beauty profile! I’d definitely recommend going on the computer when you’re setting up and choosing your products. Unlike most beauty boxes, they don’t have a rewards scheme which isn’t really a negative, but who doesn’t love a good reward scheme? Edit: After posting, I discovered they do have one! Details below. My final complaint, is that the prices on the site seem to be the reduced prices which you can buy the additional products for. At first I thought this may be because I have already reached my credit limit, but even on my order page, it shows the reduced prices. However, the reduced prices are amazing!

Overall, I really like Love Me Beauty. I had fun picking the products, a great delivery experience and a fantastic box offering great value for money. Will I be continuing? I am seriously considering it. I have decided to skip next month’s box, as the credits refresh on the 5th Feb, which is very quick after recieving this one. Plus, I do want to give Glossybox another chance with their special edition Valentine’s day box. However, I may just have to switch to Love Me Beauty from March… Watch this space!

Oh, and the discount code I used is GMQ50 and it works on the longer subscription packages too. I don’t know when it’s valid til so sorry if it doesn’t work for you!

If you do want to sign up if you use my code at the checkout, you will receive an extra credit with your first box and I will also receive a credit in return. Win-win! My referral code is REKPZ9

  1. I’m still waiting for mine to arrive, I think I’ll give it a go again next month to see how much it differs month to month with brands etc and then decide if I’ll continue – really looking forward to the nailberry arriving after seeing your swatch it looks nice and glossy! X

    • Yeah I am curious about how much variation there will be each month, but I was really impressed with the selection available when I ordered. I’ll probably still nose on the site to see what’s there this month.

Hopefully your box will arrive as quickly mine did! Have they dispatched it now?x

  2. I have a massive love/hate relationship with sub boxes. I’ve been massively disappointed with ones I’ve tried so far (bar the inner beauty one but that’s not beauty).
I’ve heard of this one that’s why I really liked your post as it gave me a bit of an idea of what it’s about. I’m still so reluctant to set up another subscribtion just yet though, I think my expectations are quite high that’s the prob.

    • I think they must be really hard to create as everyone wants/needs such different things. I’ve seen glossy go from being criticised for boxes being too different, but actually getting products tailored for your profile to being very much the same stuff, which for me is less enjoyable because I’m finding more of the products aren’t suited to me.

What I like about LMB is that I get more control and at the same time if I wanted to be surprised I can still just pick out a few things I like and they’ll do the rest.

I’m not sure how easy it is to cancel, although it seems like you’re not as tied in to short dates as other services have. But for the first one atleast, you don’t need to commit to purchasing whilst you assemble a box. Plus I found it really easy to skip a month in my account.

I think I need to give them another month or two to really see if this is a better box overall, but I am very impressed with it so far. I would personally subscribe to either Glossybox or love me beauty out of the ones I have tried x

      • Yea you’re right that it’s probably quite difficult for the companies. I had so many problems cancelling Glossy Box, I can’t even tell you but You Beauty was super easy.

I haven’t lost complete hope though, I don’t know when I’ll try another beauty one I must say but “My Little Box” has appealed to me for a while

      • Glossybox I’ve found to be okay to cancel, its just that their cancellation date is usually before you’ll get a box, so you have to think ahead about whether you need to cancel it, even if you just want to skip a month because you’re short of cash. So I really like that Love Me Beauty let you select you want to skip at any point. I wasn’t impressed with You Beauty really, it was a bit of hassle, but I had used a promo code that was misadvertised by another site.

I do think beauty boxes are a great concept and a lot of fun. Such a great way to discover new brands and products, so I’m definitely going to keep subscribed to one, but I don’t think I can afford to have two at the moment. I’ve seen great reviews of My Little Box, but I don’t think it’s one for me. I really want to try a memebox at some point though, they look awesome!x

      • Memebox is one I want to try at some point too, regarding Glossy – I did everything correctly before the cut off – but never mind, now I know right ;-)

  3. I love the idea that you get to pick out your own products. I’m not huge on surprises. I’m really liking that nail polish shade!

    • It’s great to be able to pick out the shade you want as well! I think if Glossybox included that little feature when sending out blushers etc I would be a lot happier with them as one tone definitely doesn’t suit all!

This is an absolutely lovely box though! I’m curious to see how their products will refresh when next months credits start x

  6. I know this post is old, but after a load of unwanted hassle with recurring payments on subscription services, I’ve found a way to make sure it doesn’t happen. I often use subscription services to take advantage of introductory offers, however this can often lead to extra payments due to misleading information and sneaky small print. Recently I’ve found a way to stop this. If you use paypal to pay for you’re subscription, the company you order from automatically becomes a “pre-approved payment”. Out of the 3 services I’ve used, lovemebeauty is the only to have made this abundantly clear on payment. If, like me, you only subscribe to take advantage of introductory offers, you can immediately remove the company from the list after completing your order. If you log into your paypal account and go on your profile, at the bottom there is a link called “my pre-approved payments”. If you click on this, there is a list of every company or service that can take money out of your account without your involvement or knowledge. If you click on the merchant in question, all you need to do is click the cancel button, and this stops them from being able to keep charging you monthly.I don’t know if this is common knowledge, but I did not previously know this and I thought this could help at least a few people who fall into the traps of these subscription services. I hope this helps anyone who needs it!!
